Lillias August RI - Painter

Lillias August (b 1955) studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths College in London (1973 - 1976) followed by a postgraduate course in The History of Art and Design (1977 -1978). She has exhibited widely in East Anglia and also in London receiving awards at both the Laing and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour.

She explains her work by saying “A subject comes to me out of the corner of my eye - often only through a quick glance. I am drawn to places and objects in the landscape that are often taken for granted but retain a strong sense of identity and purpose. I revel in the unpredictable nature of watercolour – a demanding and dynamic medium and I find it satisfying that, once free of me, a painting takes on its own life through other's eyes”.

Lillias has undertaken many private and public commissions including work for St. Edmundsbury and Chelmsford Borough councils, and The National Trust and St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London. She has been on the Management Council of the Bury St Edmunds Art Gallery (2000 –2004) and was project artist during the Suffolk Cathedral Millennium Project. This prestigious project included the completion of the central tower at St Edmundsbury Cathedral in Suffolk.  She has exhibited her work widely and has shown work regularly at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour (RI) in London where she was elected a member in 2006. Lillias exhibits widely thought out the UK.
