- Painter
My
abstract oil on canvas works are created by blending paint over a
carefully prepared gesso surface, until no brush marks remain, simply a
gradual transition between colours through which forms emerge. They
have a smooth print-like quality which invites close inspection.
These paintings constitute the main body of my work to date, but I have
recently returned to the northern romantic tradition of atmospheric
landscape painting for inspiration.
Since
my son and daughter moved away to other beautiful parts of the country to
study, I have produced a new series of land and sky-scape paintings, a
selection of which are exhibited here at Wildwood Gallery. To create these
pieces I work from memories of significant places and journeys, in which
the time of day, the quality of light and atmosphere and my feelings of
being in a particular place at a particular time all blend into a
sensation that I want to convey through the painting.
Back in my studio, the application of paint is
literally ‘hands-on’. I mix the paint with my fingers and smear it
onto the canvas, then move it around and blend it with brushes. The
combination of visual and tactile experience is wonderful. By working this
way I become totally absorbed in the mood of the paintings.
